There can be few more golfing venues in Europe where old and new combines so successfully than at historic Hanbury Manor in Hertfordshire. The magnificent 'old' part is the site itself, which since the 19th century has been dominated by a Jacobean-style mansion and its wonderful grounds, which originally included a nine-hole parkland course designed by the legendary Harry Vardon.
The 'new' is the conversion of the estate into Hanbury Manor Golf and Country Club. The hotel's restoration has given visitors an elegant five-star country house hotel with outstanding facilities whilst outside the land has been redesigned into an 18-hole championship-length golf course.
The course is unsurprisingly American-style, as its designer was Jack Nicklaus II. Nicklaus junior took the best of the original Vardon course, together with former meadowland to produce a new course that not only looks beautiful but plays superbly too.
Hanbury Manor has hosted a number of major professional events, including the Women's European Open in 1996 and the Men's European Tour's English Open from 1997 to 1999 won by Per Ulrik Johannson, Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke respectively.

Hanbury Manor Hotel and Country Club is celebrating the opening of its new fitness facilities including the introduction of the very latest gym kit to be launched in the UK by Technogym - a personal training machine called Radiant.
A full refurbishment of our fitness facilities as part of an ongoing leisure investment programme has now been successfully completed. The fitness project includes a complete refurbishment of both the cardiovascular gym and the resistance gym. The new facilities mean that Hanbury Manor Hotel & Country Club becomes a signature prototype model for the Marriott Leisure Clubs going forward.
The Cardiovascular Gym has been fitted with the newest Life Fitness 9500 series equipment, a 16 station personal user sound system, new floors and decoration through out. In addition, the Resistance Gym Equipment has been fully changed for Techno gym's new Selection line.
Every Techno Gym Selection machine has been designed and engineered for ease of use - from the visual set up with colour coding and accessibility of all adjustment points, to the natural style movement, ergonomic multi handle grips and supportive comfort seating -Techno Gym has incorporated the very best to deliver results in comfort. Techno Gym Selection also has a sleek design and lower profile, making for a stylish finish.
